Newbie??!!!!

We just recently bought a house with a pool (obviously)... It was completely green when we first looked at the house, The house had been empty for around a year. We got it in good shape, it was still a little cloudy. Two weeks ago we changed the sand in the filter (baker hydro hrv-30), because we wanted to make sure there was enough and that way we would know how old it was, and it wasn't filtering very well. Now when the filter comes on, you can see on the return line in the pool you can see a stream of yucky! water coming back in... I don't know what to do now. I was trying to vacuum it and just gave up because it was all coming back in. We know the lid has a leak, we ordered one from the baker website and are "waiting" for it to come in, in the mean time>>>> HELP!!!??? Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thank you
