close swim pool with leak

We just bought a house last year. we're learning as we go. our pool has a leak probly below the steps. The water is only 4 inches in the shallow end. I can't use the filter . How do I close the pool?( Last year someone charged me $225 to close. I should have watched. )The port and pump are in the basement.
