HELP!!!!!!!! mistakenly put in a 40 pound bag of pool salt

Postby JohnB2009 » Mon 07 Jun, 2010 18:24

my 18 foot round pool which holds just over 5 thousand gallons of water . it is a new pool and i thought my pump / filter also included a salt water chlorine generator combo . we put in one bag of morton pool salt ( 40 pounds ) it says on the bag " high purity with no additives " . now i have realized that i only have a pump and filter and not the chlorine generator pump filter combo unit like i thought i had ( intex ) .

now i am worried how the 40 pound bag of salt is going to affect my pool water . will i have to completely drain the pool ? is there a way to salvage or anything i need to add to counteract the salt . there is no salty taste to the water at all .

please any advice would be greatly appreciated !
:)

Don't worry. A lot of people add salt to their water even though they don't have a SWG. Some claim it makes the water feel better and it doesn't dry out the skin as bad. You might find out you like it.

ok . i wasnt sure if 40 pounds of salt was ok or if it was way too much for a 18 ft pool without a SWG . i will just keep the salt water thats in it and test the water soon to make sure everything is in balance .

thanks !!!

Its only about 1000 ppm. Not much different that a lot of pools without a SWG.

Agreed with mas985 here.
40 lbs of salt in a 5000 gal pool is not a big deal at all.
My 20,000 gallon pool took 400lbs of salt to work the generator.
You should be in the 1500ppm range, witch is far less salty than, human tears (apx. 9000 ppm), ocean (35,000 ppm)
copied from (www.spadepot.com/spacyclopedia/salt-systems.htm) :

Salinity Levels: lower than you think

When we think of saltwater, the ocean usually comes to mind. Seawater has a strong salty taste of course, and it can cause metal corrosion. So you might be wondering if salt systems are safe for spa equipment. Fortunately, the levels of salt used with Nexa Spa systems are very low by comparison, and safe for equipment.* The table below shows some approximate saline levels to give you a perspective:
Salinity Salinity Comparison - parts per million
Ocean Water 35,000 ppm
Human Tears 9,000 ppm
Ability to Taste Salt 5,000 ppm
Modern Salt Pools 3,000 ppm

A bunch of sweaty swimmers in your pool can raise your saline level almost that much.......well a big bunch.
No worries
Dean.
