Pump running time

hi,i have a electro chlorine system(swintonic,salt added system). the pool is approx 60 cu mitres. the summer temps where i live in th south west france average 28-40 cel. as i had no instructions with said pool when we purchased the house,i am still on learning curve. what is the recomended time to run the pump?. at the moment,i run it for 6 hours at night(cheap tarriff for electric) and 3 during daytime.a recent electric bill requires a cut back of electric used(electric in france is very expensive). spoke to a friend who says their son only runs his pump for 4hours at night,and his pool is fine. what do others say and think?thanks,keith :wave:

If your water is remaining clear, then a lower pump run time may be OK for you. Read Determine Pump Run Time for more info.

the recommended run time is usually atleast 8 hours, straight! the water filtered through one whole "turnover" isn't 100% as you may think. It really goes as below:

1'st turnover: 42% filtered / 58% unfiltered

2'nd turnover: 84% filtered / 16% unfiltered

3'rd turnover: 95% filtered / 5% unfiltered

4'th turnover: 98% filtered / 2% unfiltered

In order to achieve the maximum filtration, you must run the pump for the ENTIRE 4 or more turnovers straight. If you turn your pump off, wait, then filter some more later, it starts back a 42% again. This is why many homeowners have algal outbreaks or dirty/cloudy water even though they run 8 or more hours a day, yet they break it up into smaller increments. The whole cycle must be done in one run.
