Pool wall repair

We are in the process of replacing our liner and found that the integrity of the wall is compromised surrounding the light fixture. The contractor says the repair has to be done from behind the wall and will entail busting concrete to bore down to the level if the light. Price is going to be an additional $1800.00. Other option is to take light out a d seal opening.
Are there any other possible fixes? Water has been leaking behind the wall and dirt coming in to the pool. Obviously needs to be repaired, but just questioning any alternatives that might be less costly.
