Renovating Vinyl Inground pool and sludge in pool hopper.

We are in the process of renovating our vinyl in-ground pool, the liner was badly ripped when we purchased the home, and it has went with out a liner for a little over a year now. There is now about 6-7" of sludge in the pool hopper. I was just curious about the best way to go about removing the sludge.
