Pool rebuild

We've purchased a home with a 20'x40' inground pool, 12' deep. The pool equipment is not functional - it is a concrete pool, but plumbing is nonexistent. Is it possible to create a smaller pool by filling in the large hole? We want a pool, but this thing is huge! Any issues we should consider? How much does that generally run?

It has long been a popular option when old pools fail to build a smaller pool inside of the old one.
