What is a clarifier and how do you use it in a pool?

Clarifiers are chemicals you add to the pool water to "clarify" it. There are two kinds, polymer-based and alum-based. The alum based product you add the the pool while the pump is off and it produces a big blob of jelly in the pool water and while it goes down to the pool floor it pulls the particules with it. Once it has settled you gently vaccum the stuff to waste as to not redistribute it in the water.

The polymer based product basically clumps all the smaller particles into bigger particles and allow them to be catched by the filter.

Don't use too much of either kind.
