Cloudy pool

Postby Melzy » Sat 16 May, 2009 10:56

Hi
I have been reading everyone's advice and did a shock treatment to our pool - inground.
Can anyone tell me if the fact that we have a pool cover is maybe effecting the pool from recovering from this cloudy dull grey green water. The PH is 7.4-7.6.
Does the pool need sun to recover?
In addition, when shocking the pool with huge amounts of chlorine, should the filter be running, someone suggested to switch off the filter...what is the best thing to do.
Appreciate any advice.

You need the filter to be running so that you can filter out the dead algae. It helps to keep the pool uncovered during shocking though it's not an absolute requirement (the shock levels of chlorine are harsher on the cover, however). Read Defeating Algae and note that it is SUSTAINED high chlorine levels (FC relative to CYA) that get rid of algae. Simply adding some chlorine and not checking to see if it has dropped and then add some more won't do it.

If your pool does not have a floor drain, then it can take longer to clear the pool. Brushing helps, but in the worst case you may need to use a flocculant which is done with the pump off and then after everything settles you turn on the pump and vacuum-to-waste.
