Welcome Rowan. I've already commented with posts to some or your posts. Since you say you do extensive research, I suggest you learn about the chlorine/CYA relationship which has been known since at least 1974 since it was definitively determined in the paper in this link. This post will give you some background on chlorine/CYA as well as chemical facts about the by-product additions of different sources of chlorine.

There are over 20,000 pool users registered at The PoolForum and over 10,000 at Trouble Free Pool plus hundreds if not thousands of members at this forum that have taken charge of their own pools by 1) getting a good test kit including a FAS-DPD chlorine test (see here) for accurately testing FC and CC plus the kit also testing pH, TA, CH and CYA, 2) understanding the chlorine/CYA relationship so keeping a target FC/CYA ratio to prevent algae growth, 3) understanding that higher TA leads to an increase in pH and that hypochlorite sources of chlorine are nearly pH neutral when accounting for chlorine usage/consumption which is acidic, plus many other facts that minimize pool maintenance costs and keep pools clear and safe.
