Sounds like cavitation, possibly an air leak. Have you taken the lid off the pre filter recently?

Yes but no air noise and I retightened. Strange...will try again. To be clear though, it SHOULD be full of water at alk times, right?

It should be virtually full
Definately a suction side air leak. Lubricate the pump basket "O" ring, check the water level at the skimmer and make sure the skimmer weir door isn't jammed closed
