old liner as protection on floor for new liner?

I am ready to replace my 18 x 36 in ground pool liner. I have made numerous patches to the vermiculite floor using sand cement. As protection to my new liner floor is there anything wrong with cutting a psection of the old liner and leaving on the shallow end floor as protection?
