Purex Triton Sand Filter Help

I just changed the top 1 1/2" of sand in my filter and for some reason I cannot now get the top back on in it's proper place. It seems to be about 1/4" too high now and I cannot get the metal ring on properly to create the right seal. Is there a trick to getting this thing back in place? I've never had this problem before.
