Shock
If you maintain an appropriate Free Chlorine (FC) level for your Cyanuric Acid (CYA) level, then you never need to regularly shock the pool. Read the Pool School for more info.
If on the other hand you are using stabilized chlorine, such as Trichlor pucks/tabs in a floating dispenser or an inline chlorinator, then you may need to shock once a week to make up for the low active chlorine level as the CYA builds up over time, though eventually even shocking may not be enough unless you have a lot of water dilution.
