Backwash while on filter

Water is coming out of my backwash hose even though the pump is set to filter. The problem started after I did a backwash last week when I noticed the pressure was around 17 (it should be 10 to 15 according to the previous owners). Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I'd like to keep the pump on but my pool is gradually emptying ... Thanks, Eric
