I routinely vacuum my pool with no problems. However I noticed that a lot of debris is actually sand.
I have no sand around my pool so it leads me to believe its coming from the sand filter. What would cause
filter sand to make it into the pool?

The dreaded broken lateral(s) will guarantee sand in the pool.
-shut the pool down
-uncap the filter
- drain the water out if the filter has a plug at the bottom
-scoop the sand out
-locate the offending broken laterals
-unscrew the broken lateral
-replace with new, do not fix

Instead of scooping the sand you could use a shop-vac, which will greatly reduce the time spent getting the sand out. It would also be advised to replace the sand. This will increase the filtration quality of the filter, almost giving it a new life.

I used some of these techniques and found they really worked. Open environment is the big source of water sand, pool owner need to clean water after short period of time.
