PH level before winterclosing

Postby larsemann » Sun 09 Oct, 2011 08:15

Hi! I am about to close the pool for the winter. The pool will be closed for 5-6 months. The pH level is now 6.4. I wonder if I need to adjust it to above 7 before closing and if there is any problems adjusting pH when the water temperature is 8°C ?

Best regards

You do want your pH to be up higher in order to avoid metal corrosion. For your pH to be so low, it sounds like you may be using Trichor pucks/tabs which are very acidic. Continued use of Trichlor can cause problems because for every 10 ppm Free Chlorine (FC) they add, they also increase Cyanuric Acid (CYA) by 6 ppm and that makes the chlorine less effective.

Anyway, you can use 20 Mule Team Borax to raise your pH unless you want to raise the Total Alkalinity (TA) more as well in which case you can use a pH Up product or Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (careful: NOT the laundry detergent). You can either use the base demand test in your Taylor K-2006 test kit or can use The Pool Calculator to figure out dosages.
