Acid in pool

Algae problems in swimming pool water.
Green (cloudy) water or slimy pool walls.
Black algae. Mustard algae. Pink or white pool mold.

My Pool: 27' above ground pool that has been put "in" the ground. Only a foot above ground. Hayward pro series sand filter and hayward pump. When we bought the house the pool was already set in the ground. We replaced liner and all.

Just how important is the cyanuric (sp?) acid in the pool? My reading is always low. Is there something in particular you put in for this?
Thanks so much for all your help.... taking over maintenance on the pool from my husband who did it when the pool was opened a few years ago. (health problems) So I'm learning all I can to do it right!
