Pool won't hold chlorine and all other levels seem good

My pool won't hold the chlorine. I shocked once when still cloudy, it cleared up, and have just had in tablets since. But stick reads nothing for free chlorine and total chlorine.
From stick (so not super accurate), levels are:
hardness: 250
Both Chlorines : 0
pH: 8
Alkalinity: 120
Cyanuric acid: 50

Ideas?

You might be using a Non-chlorine shock or rapid shock. Check the active ingredient if its a chlorine shock it will say the available chlorine % right below the ingredient.

Get yourself a proper test kit, either the Taylor K-2006 or the TF-100 and use The Pool Calculator to calculate dosages. Shocking is not a one-time event, but maintaining an FC that is 40% of the CYA level until you pass the overnight chlorine loss test and other criteria. You should read The Pool School, especially the article on how to shock your pool.
