Vacuum to waste?

Quick question...my sand filter manual says that to vacuum and clear the pool of large debris, I should set my filter to "waste" and the water will bypass the filter pump and go right to waste - but all my hoses are connected to the filter...how can it bypass the filteR?! Do I have to get my screwdriver out and start moving hoses?

The filter will handle the plumbing end of it internally. No hose modifications should be necessary. Instead of the water running through the sand, the water is put in above and removed above the sand, thereby bypassing it.
