Water outlet replacement

While we were disconnecting our "turtle" which cleans up leaves and debris from the bottom of our pool we broke the connection to the water outlet on the side of our Doughboy AG pool. We bought a new connector, but, now we don't know how to replace it. Do we have to completely disconnect the hose running from the filter to the pool water return? There is a ring inside the pool, but, it won't budge. Any help would be appreciated.
