dont have a clue about pools

i am a new pool owner. i have researched but every site seems to be different. I know to test for cholrine and pH. How do i raise or lower these if need be? How often should the pool be shocked? What should i do about the algae and foul smell? How often should the filter be run?(i have heard many different answers for this) My husband and i also don't go in this pool alot but do well still have to do all these tests and shockings to maintain it for when we do want to go in it?
