Back washing?

Normal filtration works by pumping water through the sand from top to bottom, you have dirty water coming in from the top and clean water exiting from the bottom. The dirt is trapped in the sand bed.

When you move the multiport valve on the filter to backwash (after turning off the pump) it reverses the flow of the water, water moves from bottom of the filter to the top, the sand is raised, and the dirt that is trapped in the sand is freed up and rises, then exists via the backwash hose.
