Changing Pool Water

How often should one change the water in a large 18x36' pool? I have never done this in about 30 years, and for some reason I use about 5 lbs. of super chlorinator in it every week, and cannot get it back to it's clear state. The water is sorta cloudy, and there's algae on the bottom and sides. Help!!!!! Bob
