Our 18x33x4 oval above ground pool collapsed yesterday. The point of failure was in/around the skimmer and water return outlet. The aluminum wall was severely pitted and rotted. The wall gave way and the water gushed out rendering the pool a complete loss. It was 10 years old. We live in Northeastern PA. The pool was professionally installed and maintained by trained personnel. The aluminum rotted in a vertical fashion from just below the skimmer box to the bottom of the pool. Why did the aluminum wall deteriorate in this area only? Just wondering... What is the effect of chlorine on aluminum?
