Rusted Pool Rim

I just bought a new house with an in-ground pool and don't know the first thing about pools!

The first thing that is really bothering me is that the pool has a metal rim that is all rusted. I'm afraid to let my kids jump in or climb out because of all the rust- it is all around the whole perimeter. Adults who normally sit around the edge with their feet in the water can't do that either.

The person I purchased the house from suggested I put some indoor-outdoor carpet all around the pool. Does that sound right, or is there a better and more permanent solution?

Try a rubberised coating/ paint after treating the rust.
