Richard,
I went out this morning and it looks like the pool may be starting to respond. It is a much lighter green than it was last night. I will have my water tested again today (my kit is not here yet) and post my numbers today. I will also brush and back wash again. I will keep you posted. thanks again I am learning so much with your posts.

Dark green pool - how do I clean it??

Postby bobbyg714 » Thu 14 May, 2009 16:57

Richard,

Here are the numbers this afternoon, Thoughts?
FC 8.4
TC 8.4
CC 0
PH 7.4
Hardness 120
TA 120 (they tested a different way from the computer due to the high chlorine bleaching computer results.)
CYA 15

Any thoughts as to any action I need to take other than brushing and backwashing?

Nope. At this point, you need to filter the water to clear it and that is harder to do without a floor drain. Mostly it's brushing to stir things up to the skimmer for filtration. You could use a skimmer sock if you wanted to catch more in the skimmer and not have to clean/backwash the filter quite as often.

1 week later and pool has really started to respond. Looks white cloudy now, no more green. Can almost see the bottom of the deep end. Keeping FC levels up, brushing to filter and backwashing. Have not yet switched to D.E. filter but will this week. Thanks again for all of the help!!

Normally it only takes a week or less to clear a pool, but if the circulation is poor or the chlorine levels aren't maintained at high shock levels, or regular brushing isn't done, or the filter isn't cleaned/backwashed then it can take longer. At least you are making progress. At this point, with dead algae making the water cloudy, there are things that can be done to speed up the process such as use of a clarifier or flocculant, but those are at extra cost and not really necessary unless you've got a particularly troublesome circulation problem as with pools with no floor drains and weak pumps (i.e. many Intex pools).

My pool does not have a main drain at the bottom of the deep end. What type of flocculent would I use?

Most are OK. If you can get OMNI Liquid Floc Plus such as found here , then that's one good choice, but there are others as well. You need to be able to vacuum-to-waste (and have a pool vacuum -- hose with attachment) if you use this kind of product.

Richard,

Thanks to all your help pool is starting to look great. Blue again and not cloudy at all. 1 good vacuum and I am all set. DE filter was installed today too.
A question going forward. In order to prevent Algae as I had an issue last year, where do I want my chemical levels to be for FC, TA, CYA PH Etc?
