Hard Water and Choosing Filters

Postby jloasmom » Mon 02 Apr, 2007 13:49

Our well water is very hard. I have a 4 year old 33x18 ag pool with a Sta Rite Cartridge Filter. Last year I replaced the cartridge because I could not get the calcium deposits off of it, even after several cleanings and soaking over night with the muriatic acid. This year, again, it looks like the cartridge will have to be replaced and, to boot, our motor burned out at the end of last season, possibly also caused by the calcium build up on the cartridge? I really like not dealing with backwashing or replacing sandy/de, but before I purchase another cartridge ($100+), I am wondering. Would DE or sand filter work better with the hard water? I thought it might be the answer, but as I'm researching, I see that calcium buildup will cause problems with all types of filters. We originally filled the pool with purchased water, but we top off with the well water. Thanks for any thoughts.
