Any hints of what to look for or avoid in chosing a salt? I've heard Kosher is better.

Go to a pool store. There is a difference in salt ie water softeners & salt systems. So don't go to Lowes or Home Depot.

Use Sodium Chloride not Calcium Chloride.

Water softener pellets can be used but take longer to dissolve.

You can go to Lowes or Home Depot. I bought mine at Lowes for $4.73/40lb bag and it was 99.6% pure salt crystals. Course solar salt is what is needed. You will not get much more pure than 99.6% pure.[/b]

I think that if you check the bag it says UP TO 99.6% pure.

Repeat after me.

"Chlorine is chlorine...bleach or pucks."

Now repeat after me again.

"Salt is salt...table, kosher or solar."

Just make sure, as mentioned above, it doesn't have any additives (iron out, "system saver", etc) and it's pure salt. (IE: Blue Morton Water softener bag from Home Depot).
