Apologies for a hopefully simple question from a 1st time pool owner.!...

At the bottom of the pool there is an outlet pipe which joins the outlet pipe from the skimmer just before going into the filter ....This bottom valve has been closed since i moved in.

Is there a reason for this or should it always be open ?

It's called the main drain. If there's a valve you can use it to suck the gunk off the floor by directing the suction to it and brushing the crap towards it.
