Inground vs. above ground pump

I have an 18 x 21 x 4.5' inground pool that needs a new pump. What is the difference between an inground and above ground pump? The above ground pump is 100 dollars cheaper. Any info would be great.

I have the same question. I have a 15 x 30 semi in ground and I don't know what pump i should buy. I differently want a 2hp or 3 hp pump. I just need to know what type above or in ground.

Inground pumps are self priming, as they are ussualy above water level. Inground pool pumps are juast "flow" pumps , as they are below water level so water just comes into them, the opposite of self priming ones who suck up the air present in the pipes and draw therefore the water, by their own, to the system.
