We opened our inground pool today - went through the normal routine - However, when we turned on the filter nothing happened. We can hear a buzz indicating the electricity is on but there is no other sign of life. It's a Hayward sand filter and it's only about 3 years old. Could this be a pump motor problem?
Thanks for any advice before we call the very expensive pool guy!

A buzz can indicate a motor problem or a pump problem. It could be the pump impellor is jammed for some reason or the capacitor on the motor has failed or worse the windings in the motor have failed.
Looking at the motor there is usually a fan cover on the non drive end. In teh centre of the fan cover there is normally a hole and the motor shaft can be seen through this hole. Try turning the motor shaft using a screwdriver and see if it spins freely. If it does chances are you have an electrical fault like the capacitor, if not you most likely have a jammed pump.
