Skimmer and pressure

The pressure on my pump vacillates back and forth when the pump is running. When I checked the skimmer this morning, the basket was upside down, and the water fills up and goes back down. That round thing that covers the bottom of the basket - should it be flat or should be offcenter? We're not losing any water, so I know it's not a leak.

It sounds to me like your pump may be sucking air. This would cause the pressure to fluctuate. If this is the case, it would also explain how the basket got pushed upside down - trapped air bubbled up through the skimmer pushing the basket out.
