use a sequestering agent (jack's magic at 12-15 ppm). this will clump metal ions making them big enough to be filtered and will also coat all metals the water comes in contact with.

I have the same problem - tried Metal Free twice... then was advised by several folks with well water to use Iron Out. 5 lbs for 6500 and I now have crystal clean water! Almost instant results within minutes!! One guy has a 38,000 gallon pool and uses this all the time with NO problems.
