bubbles from returns

I am having a problem with air getting into my pump. There is a lot of air swishing around in the filter basket window and large bubbles are coming out of the return. No enough pressure to maintain vacuum operating. I am also losing water- a lot. I see no visible leaks. I am afraid I have an underground leak in the return somewhere. What now?
