leak or not?
leak or not?
Customer been having a problem with his kreepy krawley..keeps cutting out. A pool company has told him he has a leak just below the skimmer box, although there is no discernable drop in water level. Apart from testing his sand and the fact that the kreepy is A1, is there any other possible reason for this?
This does sound like a suction leak. The suction leak will pull the easiest thing, and air is easier to move than water, this would stop your pump from working effiecently and even de-prime it. I would consider a pressure test upon your line to determine it.
If you were loosing alot of water I would consider it to be a return line leak, where the water is under pressure forcing it out. As apposed to the suction leak, sucking air in, therefore not letting the water out as easy.

When this happens you can check water pressure to know if it is kreepy krauly or before it problem.
First thing would be unplug kk & check suction at skimmer. If good then it's problem with kk.
If no suction the problem could be a few things.
Is there air bubbles comming from the return lines? If pipe from skimmer does have a leak bubbles will be coming from return lines.
Is the pump lid O-ring lubed so it's air tight? This would cause air in system & slow kk until pump reprimes over & over.
Is there debris in pump basket? pressure would slow down & slow down kk.
Has filter been backwashed? when pump turns on kk will work good until pressure rises & then would slow down kk.
Does filter presure rise back up faster than normal? could have debris in sand.
Has filter been cleaned? could need chemical rinse or sand changed.
A suction side leak is before the pump anything after it is pressure leak which would cause leak.
Have you inspected kreepy krauly's hoses for leaks/tears? When this happens kk can work fine until it moves in certain direction & hose then causes problem. Pull out the kk & inspect the flapper & baffle plate, when one of them go bad the same thing can happen.
check for debris inside kk, certain shapes can let it work until it moves & then plugs it.
check kk body for cracks in it, again can work fine & when pressure hits it slows or stops.
check kk swivel cone & bearing, this is what hoses attatch to. If bad it will be very sloppy.
