It depends on your state and local codes. In MD all pools must be drained into a sewer line. If you are draining into a storm drain you need a discharge permit.

I drained into the street pool contractor told me they do it all the time because if you run them into washouts they sometimes backup into the house and flood the whole house when your sleeping or not home. Most of the houses the main drain washout which the city says to use is under concrete or can't be found. I didn't have any trouble from the city even though the contractor said they sometimes will leave a note on the door.

I think alot depends on where you live. In cities draining into the street would be a no no. Being in maryland it all depends on how close to the chesapeake bay i am. I've only ever had anyone say anything to me in washington dc and that was because i was close to rock creek park which is run by the department of the interior.
