Spa questions on Jandi LXi

Hello pool pros-
I recently moved into a new rental with a private pool in SoCal. I am having problems figuring out how to turn the spa on with my Jandy LXi controller. The water heats up, but the jets never turn on. The LCD displays that the "spa will shut off in 01:00 hrs", so it seems to be operating, but no jets. Would there be another control or button/switch somewhere that I am missing?
Also- being as I've never had my own pool, is there anything I important I need to know about it? It is cleaned/conditioned every week, so I don't think I'll have to worry about the water. There are also several tall trees near the pool, anyone have any tips or tricks (short of spending a bunch of $ for a pool cover) to keep the leaves out and keep it looking better?
