I have a swamp in my back yard not a pool. And I have been reading that bleach can be used instead of the oh so pricey shock.
So do I have it right can I use bleach the same bleach we wash whites with. Plain old Clorox. And it wont damage my system.

The answer is yes if it's unscented bleach at reasonable strength such as 6% -- Clorox Regular or an off-brand Ultra bleach. Be sure to pour it slowly over a return flow with the pump running and then lightly brush the side and bottom where you have poured to ensure mixing. See this thread for an example of how a pool upon startup can be cleared of algae using chlorine alone. You can read about clearing a pool full of algae here.
