pump shutting off

I'm trying to get my pump started again. I plugged my pump in and found that it wouldn't start. Checked the impeller and it was stuck. I got it to spin and actually motor now. But, it will only stay on for about 5 seconds and shut off. At first it smoked a little, I figured it was due to the residual debree that had been siezing the impeller? Can't figure out why it wont stay on.
