Best thread compound for PVC pipe

Postby TGMcCallie » Fri 11 Jul, 2008 00:17

I have a few places in my hard piping going to my Filter and Auto Cleaner that are leaking a little. I have tried teflon tape, and teflon compound. Neither of these have completely stopped the leaking.

Someone told me to use a blue silicone compound to stop the leak.

Is anyone familiar with this blue silicone compound? Where can I get it and what is it called? Will it more effectively stop the leak?

Does anyone know of a better remedy that they would like to give me.

The piping is Schedule 40 1 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch PVC pipe.

Thanks

I just found this forum and this is my first post.

I like to use sch. 80 cpvc nipples for threaded connections at the filter and pump. The threads on the sch 80 are machined not molded like sch 40. The threads are also graduated so fit tighter.

I also use plasto joint stik on the threads.

The CPVC nipple is the way to go-standard PVC threaded fittings also warp over time-I believe usually when the pump runs dry or gets clogged and heats up due to overexertion.
I prefer 100% silicone but there is some curing time.
