when and how to use pool chemicals

You can learn from the Pool School.
In simple terms it is a matter of maintaining the right ph balance to allow the chlorine to work.
I would recommend buying a chlorinator, which will deliver the right level of chlorine to your pool. Also get a tester so you can check the ph levels.
Every 2 weeks or so you will need to shock your pool to get rid of the debris left behind by the chlorine. A good filter will help too!
