too much chlorine

I keep getting black spots on pool bottom. Added chlorine granules and raised alkalinity level. Next day chlorine test strip shows deep purple (past the color on the chart). Added chlorine free shock per pool suppy store's suggestion. Chlorine reading is still the same, water remains tinged green and a little cloudy. What can I do to lower chlorine. I am assuming it is not okay to swim as is.

Woke up this morning, pool is clear and blue. Never looked better. Would still like to know what caused the green hue to the water yesterday.
