what size pump do i need?

We are installing a 15 x 30 inground vinyl lined pool, 3' on the shallow end and 6' on the deep end. We have been told by some installers that we only need a 1hp pump and others have offered a 2hp pump. Some have said that 2hp is just wasting electricity and costing us more than necessary.

Can someone please tell me what is the CORRECT size pump that we need? Also is a 300lb sand filter too big?

1 hp should be good just make sure it is a full rated 1 hp not a up rated one. 300lb filter should work fine.
