We recently had some larger children jumping up and down in the shallow end of the pool. This went on unattended for a number of days. We now notice holes (potholes) where they were jumping.
Is this a pool defect or not unusal for this activity?

Was this inground? Because if it was regardless the child needs their ankles checked. But I dont think children can cause that much damage by jumping up and down.

Probably an aboveground pool with a soft bottom. The bed may not have been prepared or compacted properly.
