Fit the non-return valve directly after the pump (ideally) or on the return line.

Having the non-return valve after the pump also prevents twigs or leaves getting into the valve and blocking it. The twigs get caught in the pump basket.

The air is the result of the filter or plumbing emptying into the pool through the skimmer and by installing the valve you will solve both these problems.
