pool plaster becoming rough

Postby RG » Tue 26 Aug, 2008 16:41

any help appriciated,
Our 2 yr old pool is becoming rough. Noticed it last week on floor but not walls of pool. Saltwater system, just had clorinator sensor replaced about 2 months ago. Salinity is at 3.5 and clorine at 2.0. Water is clear. Just wondering what is causing plasted to become pitted/rough.

pool plaster becoming rough

It's probably scaling or even worse dissolving of plaster. Get yourself a good test kit, either the Taylor K-2006 you can get at a good online price here or the TF100 kit from tftestkits(dot)com here with the latter kit having 36% more volume of reagents so is comparably priced "per test". Then plug in your numbers (including salt level, or TDS) into The Pool Calculator. If the saturation index is very positive > 0.5 or so, then you've probably got scaling. If it's very negative < 0.5 or so, then you've got dissolving of pool plaster.

With an SWG the pH has a tendency to get high so I suspect that your CH and TA numbers are also normal to high which combined with a high pH is leading to scaling. The other possibility is that you don't have enough CH in your pool and you are dissolving your plaster. Either problem is bad, but easily remedied, so get a good test kit so you can figure out which problem you have.

You can learn a lot more about how to take care of your pool by reading the articles in The Pool School at Trouble Free Pool.
