backwash

i am a new pool owner and my pool has a haywood sand filter, i need to bachwash my filter so when i go to backwash do i have to clsose the valve to the skimmer and then open the valve to the drain to start the backwash process?? or just turn the handle to backwash????

Prabpably does not matter - but I would keep them both open.
Shut off the pump, turn the handle. The valve actually reverses the water flow internally and diverts it out the waste pipe.
