Skimmer Cover Issue

Postby bradel » Sat 03 Jan, 2009 13:34

Hello! I have a 2-year old inground pool. When the pool turns off, the skimmer cover lid pops up and water pours out the hole. What is causing this problem? It does not happen all the time.

Thanks for your help!

Have an infloor cleaning system? You might be shutting off the pump occasionally just as it hits a high pressure cycle. This could cause the water to rush back out of the skimmer as it decompresses.

More possibilities too, but more description required.

Thanks for responding!

We do not have an infloor cleaning system. The problem happens at the end of our daily pool filtering cycle. It also doesn't happen everytime, just once a week or so.

Does it occur more often when the filter needs cleaning?

Is the pump/ filter much higher than the pool? Does the pump lose prime?

Do you have a suction line pool cleaner?

Do you have a waterfall or similar water feature?

The more we know, the easier it becomes to hypothesise.

No - sparadically.

The pump and filter are on the same level as the pool approximately 20 feet away.

Do you have a suction line pool cleaner?
Yes

Do you have a waterfall or similar water feature?
Yes, but we do not run the waterfall very often. No correlation to the issue.

Thanks!

Does it ever happen when the suction line pool cleaner is not attached?

How many check valves are there in the system? Have you checked their integrity?

I still feel stumped by this one. I wish I could see the system first hand - that always makes diagnosos easier.

I think you need to post a few operating pressures. Any gauges? What do they read at various times? What kind of filter?

Larry,

Thank you for being kind to respond to my problem.

It is a strange problem that doesn't seem to happen enough, I hope, to worry about. Next time it happens, I'll note some of the things that you have asked to see if there is something that could be causing it.

Our pool was installed by Toland Pools in the Bay Area, and they are less than helpful. If the problem becomes worse, I'll have to hire a pool company to come out and evaluate. I'll let you know if I find anything so that you can add to your knowledge base.

Thanks Brenda

It really is quite strange, though not unheard of.

The frustrating thing is that the cause (and the fix) are probably so simple.
