Vacuuming Debris at bottom of pool

I dont seem to be getting any suction when i hook my hose up... i took the basket out and hooked the hose into the round vacuum hole but no suction... i have the filter pump on... is there some other switch or control that needs to be on to get the suction to work? Again, everything is hooked up correctly... i know there is something simple i m not doing thank you!!!

Did you fill the hose with water first?
If the pump sucks air and loses prime it won't create any suction.

i assumed that since the hose is actually in the water that water was filling the hose, but i will try again and make sure the hose is filled.
